Turnitin's AI disclaimer: The AI writing assessment may not always be accurate (it may misidentify both human and AI-generated text) so it should not be used as the sole basis for adverse actions against a student. Clicking the percentage will open a pop-up window with some information about how the score was calculated. On April 4, 2023, Turnitin added a preview of their new AI writing detection tool. If there is a probability that any portion of the document was written by AI, a percentage score will be displayed on the Similarity Report. For more information, please visit Interpreting the Similarity Score. Instead, consider the use of quotations, citations and bibliographic material when reviewing the score.
The Similarity Score itself should not solely be used to determine the academic integrity of a student’s paper. Turnitin also flags anomalies such as hidden text and replaced characters. If there are instances where a student's writing is similar to, or matches against, any of the sources, Turnitin will highlight it for instructors or TAs to review. It generates reports after checking students’ assignment submissions against institutional and online databases. The grade will have to be manually entered into the grade book for your course.Turnitin Similarity is a plagiarism detection tool. Note : Turnitin grades will not sync with the Canvas grade book. Turnitin originality reports can be accessed through the grade book through an icon in the Speedgrader. Click Save as default settings to preserve your settings for future Turnitin assignments. Click Assignments in the Course Navigation menu.Select your course in the Global Navigation menu on the left.When you are setting up your assignments, you can select Turnitin as your Plagiarism Review tool.
The Turnitin website cannot be used directly for generating reports. Note: At Brown, Turnitin can only be used within Canvas, by student-submitted papers through assignments. Turnitin is a tool that compares student papers with a vast array of online sources and paper repositories and returns a detailed report on similarities.
